Violence against women - in particular intimate partner violence and sexual violence - is a major public health problem and a violation of women's human rights.
According to estimates published by the WHO, about one in three (30%) women in the world have experienced physical and / or sexual violence between close partners or sexual violence outside their partners during their lifetime.
Most of this violence is intimate partner violence. Globally, almost a third (27%) of women aged 15-49 who have been in a relationship report having experienced some form of physical and / or sexual violence from a close partner.
Violence can have negative effects on women's physical, mental, sexual, and reproductive health, and can increase the risk of HIV infection in some circumstances.
Violence against women is preventable. The health sector has an important role to play in providing comprehensive health care to women victims of violence and as a starting point to refer women to other support services they need.
