Written by Henrik Ibsen - often called "the father of modern drama", A Doll's House is a three-act play that portrays the tragic hypocrisy of Victorian middle-class marriage.
The married couple, Nora and Torvald Helmer are both thrilled because Torvald has gotten a new job as the manager of a bank and they wouldn't have to worry about money anymore. Christine Linde, Nora's old school friend who's recently widowed, approaches Nora in hopes that she can ask Torvald to help her get a job.
Throughout their conversation, Nora tells Christine about the debt she has from when Torvald got sick. She hid the debt from her husband to save his pride and is now secretly paying it through saving her allowances and working odd jobs.
One day, a man named Krogstad confronts Torvald on his study. Torvald agreed to give Christine a job, and that job is Krogstad's but it turns out, Krogstad is the person Nora borrowed money from and Nora forged her father's signature to get the loan. Now, Krogstad is threatening to expose Nora's crime if he loses his job.
Nora expects that Torvald would want to sacrifice his reputation for hers and plans to commit suicide to prevent him from doing so - but anything can happen in a doll's house.
