No doubt you've heard of intermittent fasting, but how many of you know what it is? Too many people fixate about the word "fasting" and assume that it means going without food for days on end, ignoring the word "intermittent."
While it is about going without food for a period of time, it generally doesn't involve days of starving yourself, unless you want to of course, but that's not a healthy way to lose weight.
Intermittent fasting is all about alternate cycles of eating and fasting and plenty of studies have shown that this really works for weight loss, not to mention all the other health benefits that come with it, but only if you do it right.
So, what, exactly, is intermittent fasting?
It is nothing more than a pattern of eating where you eat and then you fast. Rather than being about what you eat, which is what many diets are based on, it focuses more on when you eat, although you do need to be a bit careful about what goes down your throat!
There are also several methods to choose for, most of which are suitable for women and all of them divide the day or the week down into periods of eating and periods of fasting. If you think about it, you already fast for part of the day when you sleep and intermittent fasting is all about going just that little bit longer without food.
The easiest way is to miss breakfast, eat at lunchtime and again by about 8 p.m. - Technically that means you are fasting for around 16 hours every day, eating all your meals in a period of 8 hours, the most popular way of doing intermittent fasting.
You might think it's hard to go without food for so long, but it isn't. In fact, you are likely to find that your energy levels are much higher. But I'll get hungry, I hear you whine, I'll starve to death! No you won't.
Yes, to start with, hunger will kick in, but that's only because your body has become used to a never-ending stream of food; eventually though, it will learn to accept this new way of eating and the hunger pangs will disappear.
Not all forms of intermittent fasting ban food. Some will allow you to only drink tea, coffee, water and other drinks with no calories but some will allow small amounts of certain foods, and supplements are allowed too, provided they have no calories, because, as I will explain later, it's all about the caloric deficit.
