A princess is a regal rank and the feminine equal of a prince.
Most often, this term has been used for the consort of a prince, or for the daughter of a king, queen or prince. Some princesses have been known to be the reigning monarchs of principalities.
There have been fewer instances of reigning princesses than reigning princes, as most of the principalities excluded women from inheriting the throne. Still there are some princesses that have gone to become to queen such as the queen of England Elizabeth Alexandra Mary Windsor.
A princess is most often the idol for young girls as they want to become a princess when they grow up. But have you ever heard of the real princesses apart from the Disney princesses?
An example of a real-life princess is Princess Diana (1961-97) married to Prince Charles heir to the British throne, for 15 years.
She is mother to prince William, who is second in-line to the throne, and Prince harry born in 1984. Known as the Princess of wales, Diana transformed into a glamorous icon, evoking the romantic image of the fairytale princess. Diana died on 31 august 1997, in a car accident in Paris, at the age of 36.
