In 1921, Sergei Prokofiev's Love for Three Oranges--one of the earliest and most strikingly whimsical examples of modernist opera--premiered in Chicago. Before this important opening, however, came Vsevolod Meyerhold's 1913 theatrical divertissement, upon which the opera is based, and Carlo Gozzi's 1761 commedia dell'arte-infused theatrical fairy tale.
