This book flows like the oral history that it is. The author fashioned a bluesy story arch rising from two grounds 100 years apart and slowly, steadily, like the country blues it narrates, the stories come together at a surprising point. There is much to enjoy and learn from this book. One stream of characters and characterizations are real (historical), while the two "heroes", one representing the past-present and one representing the present-future are fictional. They are the engines that drive the telling. It is just this voicing of "telling" that makes this such a great book to read aloud. I highly recommend finding someone who will listen and do so. This would make a great audio book with recorded examples of the sounds of Charley Patton, Blind Lemon Jefferson, Lead Belly, and many of the other Mississippi Delta musicians who are represented in this book.
