Royce Romilly is the second son. He wasn't supposed to inherit. When Maxence escapes the house, his run-in with Juliet Thawyer and her father leaves Royce with few options. He sends her injured father, who saw no proof, to an inn, and takes Juliet home with him to ensure her silence. Juliet is frightened and furious with the man who has taken her. She suspects him of being the criminal in the area who has been kidnapping young women. When Juliet enters a forbidden area of the house in her perusal to find the other captured young ladies, she gets run-down by Maxence, and Royce comes to her rescue. As Royce lets his guard down, Juliet begins to see the Romilly brothers in a new light.
After Royce receives numerous visits from Threves, a nosy and threatening acquaintance, he puts the household on their guard. Threves is certain that Royce is the man abducting the women in the region. One morning, Royce wakes to find out Juliet has gone missing. He instructs a search and as one event leads to the next, Royce finds himself in life-threatening trouble. Juliet finds herself in the middle of it all and though she does all she can to protect Maxence, he commits a very heroic act. Will Royce be pardoned? Will Juliet escape? Will Maxence's identity come to light? Can love really be found in the most unlikely of places?
