It's the start of high school, and Cooper Riley, an incoming freshman, already has his first assignment for his film class. He must choose a subject for his documentary project, and without an ounce of hesitation, Cooper picks his best friend Will as his subject.

Will lives a normal life with his mom, Lisa, a devoted Christian, however, there are deeper layers to him, layers Cooper wishes to unravel in his documentary. Will is also infatuated with a girl named Zoey, who lost her older brother over the summer. After Cooper's first day of high school, Zoey gives a cryptic warning to Cooper to make sure Will remains indoors after midnight.

Ignoring her warning, Cooper and Will attend a party in a cabin in the woods. Across the lake lives a supposed terrifying beast that only emerges on a full moon, and Cooper urges Will to join him to find out if the beast is real or not. After a violent encounter with the beast, Will winds up in the hospital the next day, and Will divulges to Cooper that he does not feel like himself anymore. Zoey informs the boys that Will is now cursed and will ultimately turn into a werewolf on a full moon. Now, Will and Cooper must find a way to reverse the curse before Will becomes a beast permanently.
