商品簡介

The author describes episodes and periods in his life between 1940 and 2021 during an unprecedented period in history when humanity as a whole is faced with threats from a global pandemic and catastrophic changes in the climate. He believes this current threat is because world leaders have failed to appreciate, or perhaps choose to underestimate:

1. the threats posed by rising carbon emissions due to human activities

2. the continuing dependence of economic activity on regular supplies of fossil fuels; oil in particular

3. human exposure to global pandemics due to the relentless impact of human beings on the natural environment.

He fears that the opportunity to stop, let alone reverse, disastrous rises in the temperature of the Earth may have been lost because feedback warming mechanisms caused by human activity may already have been set in motion by the release of methane from the melting tundra and the reduction in the reflective power of ice as Arctic regions melt.

Using examples drawn from his own experiences, the author describes the link between the current global economic system, a widening gap between rich and poor and a global ecological crisis. He concludes that fundamental changes in economics are essential and advocates the urgent need for a new social science better suited to human needs and the equitable sharing of wealth measured by indicators other than gross domestic product. In the UK the minds of leading politicians have been focused on the development of vaccines to combat a global pandemic and how to deal with its economic consequences.

He believes that difficult times lie ahead for everyone which requires global cooperation at all levels of society in the face of increasing forest fires, viruses, flooding, wind forces, mass migrations and climatic threats to agricultural land and food supplies.

The development of nuclear fusion offers some hope of nuclear fusion meeting humanities long term energy needs, but this prospect remains on the horizon.
