Sustainable Strategies in Organic Electronics reviews green materials and devices, sustainable processes in electronics, and the reuse, recycling and degradation of devices. Examples of topics addressed in the book include large-scale synthesis and fabrication of safe device materials processes that neither use toxic reagents nor solvents, nor produce toxic by-products. Another key challenge touched on is the evaluation of organic electronics production and its costs in terms of energy consumption, labor, and waste disposal in comparison to other methods.
Emerging opportunities such as new synthetic approaches for enabling the commercialization of pi-conjugated polymer-based devices are touched on. Additionally, new efforts towards incorporating into devices, materials from renewable resources for a low carbon footprint approach. Particular attention is given to green materials processing. For example, halogen containing and/or toxic aromatic solvents have been the most investigated processing option. However, these solvents are banned in mass-production electronic FAB factories. Several groups have reported interesting results by using non-halogenated solvents/additives to address green processing of organic semiconductors for solar photovoltaic (organic photovoltaics) module applications. Finally, Sustainable Strategies in Organic Electronics discusses the latest advances towards device biodegradability and recycling.
