A stable sense of self can not fully exist when we place our identity on external things

Often, we feel the pressure to define ourselves through our jobs, financial status, success, relationships, grades, appearance, what others say about us and many other means. But what happens to our identity when we experience failure? Or lose our jobs, or that boy or girl friend leaves us. The very foundation of our identity is shaken. Many Christians still struggle with the notion of who they are in Christ.

There is a great need to seek and find our identity in something immutable: Christ Himself.

This issue of discovering who we are has to do more with discovering who God is, because our identity begins with God: We are made in His image. In Jesus, we do not lose our true selves, but we become our true selves.
