1928: Far from in love with the idea of moving from North Dakota to Minnesota, sixteen year-old Doris Zelm is feeling distressed and sad about the direction her life seems to be heading. As they adjust, Doris is unsettled by the nature of her new house. Why was she told that the cleaning crew never bothered to open a door leading to a hidden attic? Who were the mysterious cleaners in charge of emptying the house? Were they hiding something? Are they still around? She wants answers. Furthermore, the kids, eager for adventure, build a clubhouse in the woods thinking it will be the perfect place to play games, tell stories, and build memories. That all changes when a mysterious man dressed in a soldier's uniform shows up during a storm, and asks for help. In their quest to help and protect this soldier, friendships are tested, relationships are soured, and danger is imminent.
