Yellow Watch and Other Stories, the Journey of a Portuguese Woman, is a collection of twenty-three related stories depicting Milita's life journey. It begins when she's five-years old in Amendoeiro, a dusty town of four unpaved short streets with a chapel, that once was a cork factory, Antonio's Taverna, the main bar and hub of the town, and Casa Rosa, the whore house. The population never exceeded more than five hundred people. Everyone was known by their first names. It's a constrained and oppressive time, brutally held together by the dictator, Antonio Salazar, patriarchal laws and social rules, where women and children are mere chattels within the law, and an ever watching eye of the Catholic Church. Milita's mother, who projects her own unhappiness and un-lived life onto her daughter, embodies the mendacity of the world around her in which Milita must learn to navigate, including a forced proxy-marriage at fifteen. Milita's journey takes her to Toronto where she finds love, freedom, and opportunity. But Amendoeiro is rooted in her being--a place where she returns, literally and metaphorically, searching for that maternal love that was never to be hers.
