This book will appeal to a wide-ranging audience, including university libraries, academic researchers and popular readership. It will be particularly welcomed by those interested in tourism studies as there is precious little critical work on tourism workforces throughout the academic literature. The issues associated with workforces addressed in this book serve both to address a lacuna on the critical tourism studies side and growing concern on the practitioner side over workforce quality and supply. However, because this book deals with broader political economic processes that are shaping local places to induce demand for extra-local workers, it has a potential for interest well outside the traditional bounds of tourism studies. Key topics included in this book are: labor migration, guest workers, housing shortages, gentrification, and precarious work.
