Ineffable states of consciousness characterized by incredible joy and concentration, the jhanas are central to the earliest Buddhist teachings. For centuries in Southeast Asia, oral Yogavacara (yoga practitioner) traditions kept the practice of jhāna meditation alive, but in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, reforms in Buddhism suppressed jhana in favor of vipassana, or insight meditation.
