The openings or splits in the upper lip or the roof of the mouth are known as cleft lip and cleft palate. These are defects which are present at birth. It is caused due to the tissues of the mouth and face do not fuse in a proper manner. The reasons behind cleft lip and palate can be either environmental or genetic in nature.
