If you want to learn more about giraffes, you've come to the right place. Here, you'll learn about the tallest living ruminant on Earth. Traditionally, giraffes were believed to be a single species with nine subspecies. In reality, giraffes are not just one species but a variety of subspecies that all belong to the same genus. Did you know that giraffes don't drink often? Their water needs are mostly met through food. That means that they suffer in dry conditions. They must travel long distances to find water. You'll be surprised to learn that giraffes weigh almost as much as a human! The giraffe's heart weighs around eleven kilograms, which is almost as much as the weight of a human! In addition to their tall stature, giraffes are also among the tallest mammals on Earth. There are nine subspecies of giraffes: Rothschild, Rhodesian, Angolan, and Nubian. These three species are distinguished by the markings they have on their skin, their diet, and their geographic range. Even though they may appear different, all of them are basically the same species and can interbreed. These apes have enormous tongues! Their 18-inch tongues pull leaves off branches, allowing them to eat hundreds of pounds of leaves per week. Giraffes are also capable of seeing predators and can spot them miles away. The giraffe also has a reputation for being the tallest living animal on Earth. Despite its size, giraffes must travel hundreds of miles to find food and have to keep an eye out for predators
