During the sweltering summer of 1965, the encompassing story follows the lives of a group of kids from the innocence of childhood through the horrors of war. Interwoven are the life struggles of veterans from three foreign conflicts: WW I, WW II, and Korea. Issues of substance abuse, mental illness, domestic abuse, and racism figure prominently. In the end, desperate threads of prayer face a wrathful jury. Judgement's gavel hammers down on the raw, frayed edge of an Asian jungle where faith, fate, and courage make their final peace.
Afterword The Goats of Rye Grass Hill. I'm a little reluctant to admit I started out thinking I was going to write "The Great American Novel". I figured-
why not shoot for the moon. So, I wrote a story about small-town America, children, animals, love and hate, joy and sorrow, cowardice and courage, friendship, community, baseball, war, Old Glory, the Good Book, and the wonder of life. I set it in the 60s,
the years that changed America, researching the decade down to the finest detail. What a time to have lived! Anyway, in the end . . . did I write a great American novel? Maybe not . . . but I truly gave it my best shot.
