Art, Inequity and Technological Ubiquity

This book forms an exploration into how technological means and modern advancements have changed the art world and humanity's experiences with art; it delves into the bleary inequity that thrives in art because of a furthering of technological methods. It foregrounds how beneath these apparent advances in technology in art, be they social, economic or political, lays a general unequal hierarchy in humanity. In three main chapters, this thesis depicts troublesome findings of technology and art supported by sources such as books, scholarly articles, artists and thinkers on the subject. The first chapter considers pioneering art movements that use technology as early as the 1960s, appreciating that technology can be a valuable tool in light of creating innovative art and driving growing interaction with the public through art. The second chapter inspects the ingrained hierarchy and inequality attributed to technological means and how art falls victim to facilitating this, creating problems in gender visibility, specifically for women. The third and final chapter considers current affairs in art and technology movements today, depicting the bleak reality of its effects as a tool in furthering inequity generally, minimising auratic experiences with the arts culture, and then looks at current art movements that exacerbate topical issues, such as climate change degradation.
