Sino-US maritime rivalry

As Graham Allison wrote in 2013, "The question for the next few decades is how China and the United States can escape the 'Thucydides trap' - the conflict resulting from the rivalry between an emerging power and a ruling power, as between Athens and Sparta in the fifth century BC, or between Germany and its neighbours in the late 19th century. The rapid emergence of any new power disrupts the status quo. Historically, in 11 out of 15 cases since 1500, this has ended in war. Historically the thalassocratic powers have always prevailed. Thucydides' trap is closing in the stratosphere, the oceans and the web, spaces of lawlessness.
