After the assassination of his father, Philip, Alexander became King of Macedonia in 336 BC at the age of 20 years. He immediately killed all rivals to his throne and set about subduing the Greek states to support him in the invasion of Persia. Within two years Alexander began his invasion of the Indian sub-continent defeating King Porus at the Hyaspes (modern- Jhelum) in the (modern) Punjab. Thereafter Alexander returned to the west to die in Babylon in 323 BC-aged 32 years, forever to be known as 'the Great' .
