The Creation of Place or Gardens of Sesshu 創造される場所または雪舟

During the Muromachi period (15th century) in Japan, the painter-monk Sesshu Toyo left behind over fifty authentic works, including six national treasures. Not only in painting, but also in garden design, he created magnificent and elegant gardens. However, there is no supporting evidence specifically attributing these gardens to Sesshu.
　Nevertheless, even if the authenticity remains uncertain, or if time has altered the form of the gardens, perhaps what is more important is not their authenticity (being real) but their vitality (being alive). Yet, in the face of these vast and awe-inspiring spaces, we may be perplexed about what we should find within them, as we do not share the spatial style of the Muromachi period.
　It is said that Zen gardens conceal one essential point that is not explicitly revealed. However, in Sesshu's gardens, it seems that multiple perspectives are intentionally arranged. By abandoning the notion of a single viewpoint and embracing a multifaceted approach, the complete panorama of Sesshu's garden, which draws viewers into the space, begins to emerge.

私たちは常に「エデンの園」を希求している。安心で、安定した、興味深い場所を求め続けている。小さな日常の困難に直面したときに、　あるいは戦争やパンデミックや災害のときにこそ尚更に。
　だが「エデンの園」はどこかに在るものではない。それは創造されるものであり、多くの創造的な経験が積み重ねられるとき、私たちは未知なる空間を自らの「場所」にすることができる。
　室町時代の画僧・雪舟等楊は六点の国宝を含む五十点あまりの真筆を残しているが、造園においても豪放で閑雅な庭園を残している。だがこれらの庭園には雪舟の作庭を裏付ける資料はない。
　だが真偽のほどが定かでなくても、あるいは時が庭園の形を変えていたとしても、REAL（本物）であることよりLIVE（生きている）であることが重要ではないだろうか。
　しかしその茫漠とした凄みのある空間に何を見出せばいいのか、室町時代の空間様式を共有しない私たちは戸惑う。
　禅宗の庭には明らかにされない、枢要な鑑賞点が一つ隠されているという。ところが雪舟の庭には、いくつもの視点が布置されているように思う。
　一つの視点の考えを捨て、多視点で複眼化したとき、観るものを空間に惹きこむ雪舟の庭の全貌がはじめて見えてくる。
