商品簡介
. Can Yuki, a fisherman's daughter, whose family is afflicted with a terrifying disease causing agonizing pain, paralysis and death, and Kiyo, the son of an executive for Chisso, the company accused of causing the illness, have a future together?
In 1956, they meet by chance and become fast friends. Soon all living things in the once beautiful Minamata Bay die, and the already impoverished fishers living around it begin suffering from the unknown ailment, including Yuki's family. With no fish to catch and incapacitated from the disease, her parents can no longer make a living, and they, along with other fishermen, are starving. As the sole wage earner, Yuki is reduced to low-paying, backbreaking work. Pleas for help to the community and government are ignored.
The city populaces are dependent economically on Chisso. Afraid for their incomes, they turn their backs on Yuki's family and other lower-class people who tend to get the disease. The corporation denies culpability and refuses to give aid. Kiyo is powerless to convince his father to get the company to help. As thousands continue to be plagued with the excruciating sickness, Kiyo helps researchers find answers to the devastating neurological disease. But they are blocked by Chisso, the government, and the media to keep it from spreading.
Together Yuki and Kiyo must fight the powerful and ruthless corporation to save her family and the bay.
This book is based on the true story of one of the world's worst industrial pollutions of Minamata Bay, Japan.
