Shadow work - coined by Carl Jung, is based on the concept that our shadow contains rejected, suppressed, and disowned parts of ourselves. Despite its name, it is important to understand that our shadow self also contains our good qualities, such as confidence, leadership, playfulness, courage - that have all been pushed down into our subconscious mind for one reason or another. These hidden positive traits are usually projected by us onto people we seem to admire for them - and it is simply because we recognize them within ourselves but are not able to access them (just yet). The shadow aspects of ourselves are usually formed in childhood and once solidified in our subconscious, tend to control our lives without our conscious permission - like a software program running in the background. When we experience moments of extreme stress or pressure, they manifest as uncontrollable outbursts. The purpose of shadow work is to bring the unconscious mind into our conscious awareness.
