However, the long record of brawls Publius has build up since his return forces the young magistrate of the Republic that commands him to assign him with a different task: he is to be jailer of the Gallic leader Vercingetorix, apprehended at the battle of Alesia. This hellish warlord will remain imprisoned for six years in the Tullianum, in Mamertine prison, until his execution is ordered. During his long captivity, they will develop a close friendship based on mutual respect and their memories of war.
