Wearing her pants and tunic, Mary became the first female surgeon in the United States Army. She persisted through an education system stacked against her, divorce, government roadblocks, and enemy forces who took her prisoner. In the end, she won the Medal of Honor for her bravery and service during the Civil War. She provided a safe place for others like her. When the government changed its mind about her medal, Contrary Mary refused to give it back and wore it proudly for the rest of her life.
