Playing sports is about fairness, teamwork, striving your best to score goals, triumphing over adversity and, ultimately, winning the championship. But for the professional game of hockey in Canada, there is more at stake than putting the puck in the back of the net to beat the other teams. The hallowed sport has a dark underbelly, with nefarious activities taking place both off and on the ice, as vividly described in the novel, My Last
Goal. The book's subtitle (Murder, Corruption, Money Laundering, and a Wife-What Possibly Could Go Gone Wrong) hints at the intricacies that come when the pure thrill of
the game becomes complicated by criminal acts.
Covering two decades, from the 1950s to the 1970s, the book centers on the story of young hockey player Larry and his unconventional relationship with Coach Bill, a former scout and pro player. He's also one of the "original six" hockey players entangled in
influencing which NHL team gets the glory of bragging rights and bringing the Stanley Cup home. As Larry grows and hones his skills, the double life Bill is leading begins to unravel, threatening to take away everything he has strived for in the name of the game.
