The story begins in Munich, where Viktor Weiss, a disillusioned historian, finds himself at a crossroads in his life. Recently widowed and emotionally hollowed by the loss of his wife, he is desperate to escape his past, to escape the memories that haunt him. He accepts an invitation from an old acquaintance, an enigmatic scholar named Dr. Rajeev Bhattacharya, to visit his ancestral home in Anand, India, hoping that the change of scenery will offer him the closure he so desperately craves.
