Hyperglycaemia (high blood sugar) occurs when the level of sugar in the blood is too high. Gestational diabetes is high blood sugar that develops during pregnancy and usually disappears after birth. It can happen at any stage of pregnancy, but is more common in the second or third trimester. It occurs when a woman’s body cannot produce enough insulin, the hormone which controls blood sugar levels.
