As Magdalene struggles to accept Omar's betrayal and to understand a universe that rewards assholes like Stan and punishes people like Morris, the other shoe drops and Omar betrays her again. She can't stay in the Commune any longer. But where can she go?

Enter Gavin Cavanaugh, the man behind the Tower. A reclusive genius who made his billions writing software for casino gaming machines, Cavanaugh now runs Answers Industries, a mysterious firm with roots in both the living world and the Land of the Dead.

Cavanaugh has been trying to recruit Magdalene for a long time, and he offers her everything she could possibly desire in exchange for signing on as one of his Deathwalkers. He even claims he has a way to balance the scales of cosmic justice and to ensure evil people like Stan are punished.

But the Dead are uneasy with Cavanaugh's project, and Magdalene suspects he's hiding things from her, including the real reason she's there. As she delves deeper into the project and becomes closer with the man himself, she begins to doubt everything she's ever known. There's only one thing Magdalene knows for sure: Gavin Cavanaugh will do anything-anything-to keep her there.
