商品簡介

Battle of the Coral Sea (May 4-8, 1942)
The Battle of the Coral Sea was a major naval battle during World War II, fought between the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) and the United States Navy (USN) and Royal Australian Navy (RAN). It was the first aircraft carrier battle in history and the first naval battle where opposing ships never directly fired at each other. Instead, aircraft launched from carriers carried out the attacks.

Background and Causes

  • After the attack on Pearl Harbor (December 7, 1941), Japan expanded rapidly across the Pacific.
  • Japan aimed to capture Port Moresby in New Guinea, which would have threatened Australia and strengthened Japan's defensive perimeter.
  • The United States and Australia, having cracked some Japanese communication codes, learned about the operation and moved to intercept the Japanese fleet.

Forces Involved
Allied Forces:

  • United States Navy & Royal Australian Navy
  • Aircraft carriers: USS Lexington (CV-2) and USS Yorktown (CV-5)
  • Supported by cruisers, destroyers, and other vessels.
Japanese Forces:
  • Aircraft carriers: Shōkaku and Zuikaku, along with the light carrier Shōhō.
  • Supported by heavy cruisers, destroyers, and troop transport ships.

Key Events of the Battle

  1. May 3-4, 1942 - Japanese forces occupied Tulagi in the Solomon Islands. U.S. aircraft from USS Yorktown launched a surprise attack, sinking several Japanese ships.
  2. May 6, 1942 - Both fleets searched for each other in the Coral Sea.
  3. May 7, 1942 - The U.S. forces located and sank the light carrier Shōhō in a massive aerial assault. This led to the famous phrase:
"Scratch one flattop!" - U.S. pilot Robert E. Dixon
  1. May 8, 1942 - Both sides launched full-scale airstrikes:
    • USS Lexington was heavily damaged and later scuttled.
    • USS Yorktown was badly damaged but survived.
    • Shōkaku suffered major damage, while Zuikaku avoided destruction.
    • Both sides withdrew, with Japan abandoning its plan to invade Port Moresby.

Outcome & Significance

  • Tactical victory for Japan: The U.S. lost USS Lexington, a valuable aircraft carrier.
  • Strategic victory for the Allies: Japan failed to capture Port Moresby, halting their advance toward Australia.
  • Weakened Japanese Carriers: Shōkaku was badly damaged, and Zuikaku lost many planes and pilots. This directly affected Japan's ability to fight in the Battle of Midway (June 1942), where the U.S. won a decisive victory.

Legacy

  • First Carrier vs. Carrier Battle: This battle changed naval warfare forever.
  • Boosted Allied Morale: Stopped Japanese expansion in the South Pacific.
  • Set the Stage for Midway: Japan's weakened carrier force was a major disadvantage in the next critical battle.
