Jacob seems like an ordinary guy with a quiet life-he stocks shelves at a grocery store called Kettlebare and falls in love with Jeannie, a fast-talking cashier with a sharp wit and a soft spot for him. After a whirlwind eight-month romance, they get married at the courthouse, throw a small party with friends and family, and settle into a cozy routine. Life is simple. Normal. Predictable.

Except Jacob isn't who he says he is.

Every night, Jacob tells Jeannie he's "going for a walk." In truth, he presses a hidden button on what looks like a flash drive on his keychain-activating an invisible jet that carries him at light speed to another planet. There, he's known as Jakal Var, a representative in a planetary council trying to prevent war from spilling onto Earth.

But secrets don't stay buried forever.

As Jacob's double life stretches thinner, Jeannie begins to notice strange details-dusty shoes, odd behavior, and a lingering distance. And someone else has noticed Jacob's trips, too. A figure from the other world has crossed into Earth's shadows, watching. Waiting.
