The Edenton Rebellion - Women Who Defied an EmpirePart of the
Hidden Histories of the Tar Heel State Series by author Robin Crumpler
They risked everything-with no right to vote, no political power, and no legal protection. But in 1774, a group of women from North Carolina helped change the course of American history.
In the quiet coastal town of Edenton, North Carolina, fifty-one bold women did what no colonial woman had ever dared: they publicly defied the British Crown, risking the death penalty for treason. Signing their names to a political petition boycotting British tea and goods, these women launched one of the earliest organized acts of female resistance in the American colonies-now known as the
Edenton Tea Party.
The Edenton Rebellion - Women Who Defied an Empire brings this little-known Revolutionary War story to life with gripping historical detail and narrative flair. Readers will discover how these women's actions shocked both American patriots and British loyalists, made headlines across the Atlantic, and helped ignite the spirit of independence in the American South.
This book is perfect for fans of:
- Revolutionary War history
- Women's roles in early America
- North Carolina history
- True stories of defiance and courage
- Local hidden histories with national impact
Based on extensive research using colonial newspapers, letters, and original petitions, this compelling account explores the social risks, political implications, and long-term legacy of the
Edenton Tea Party. The book also examines how the event was ridiculed in British cartoons and dismissed in American textbooks-until now. This is the first in a series of books on North Carolina history.
Whether you're a teacher, student, or curious reader, this nonfiction narrative offers a fresh look at the American Revolution through the eyes of the women who lived it.
