Before Fanon: Haiti and the Birth of Black Psychology
How Haitian Thinkers Like Firmin and Price-Mars Reshaped the Mind of a People Long before Frantz Fanon became the voice of decolonial psychology, Haitian thinkers were already leading the way. This groundbreaking book uncovers the hidden intellectual revolution that followed Haiti's 1804 independence-one that sought not just freedom from chains, but freedom from shame, silence, and inferiority.
Through the forgotten brilliance of Ant幯or Firmin, who dismantled scientific racism in 1885, and Jean Price-Mars, who defended Vodou, Creole, and African identity in 1928, Before Fanon shows how Haiti pioneered the world's first Black psychological liberation movement. These thinkers fought to restore pride, cultural truth, and memory in the face of global erasure.
This book is not just history-it is therapy.
It is not just recognition-it is restoration.
Haiti did not wait to be told who it was.
Haiti remembered.
If you care about identity, freedom, or healing the wounds of racism-this book will change how you see Haiti, and how you see yourself.
