Sir George Hubert Wilkins led an extraordinary life as a war photographer, aviator, polar explorer, scientist, and naturalist. Born in rural South Australia in 1888, Wilkins became the first to film combat in war, fly across the Arctic, and pilot a submarine beneath the polar ice. A pioneer in aerial mapping and meteorology, he documented vast unexplored regions of the Arctic and the Antarctic. His relentless pursuit of knowledge and adventure was fueled by a rugged upbringing and insatiable curiosity. This book highlights his remarkable contributions-especially his often-overlooked Antarctic expeditions-and restores Wilkins to his rightful place among the great explorers of the 20th century.
