When NAWBO was founded in 1975, the portrait of the entrepreneurial woman looked very different. Women were
generally ignored when they tried to apply for a loan, purchase a car or buy a home. After all, government and financial entities believed women were proficient at a limited number of trades like selling baked goods, sewing and doing hair, not owners of a wide variety of successful businesses. When they received any media coverage at all, it was usually
in local newspapers on Mother's Day. It was then that 12 entrepreneurial women in Washington, DC decided to
meet informally to trade information about running their businesses since they could not join their local chambers or rotary clubs to connect with other entrepreneurs. One year later, NAWBO was incorporated. Take a historic journey across five decades of empowering women business owners across the nation and the globe.
