Although it makes up only about 1-2% of the treated wastewater, sewage sludge contains most of the original pollutants. The treatment and disposal of this sludge, however, pose significant challenges. These include high treatment costs, the presence of emerging pollutants, health risks, and public acceptance issues. Traditional methods such as storage and incineration have raised concerns regarding their environmental and societal impacts, prompting the search for alternative sludge management solutions. Managing sludge effectively requires a comprehensive and systematic approach that balances environmental benefits, social acceptability, and economic feasibility. With sludge production continuing to rise globally due to factors like population growth, urbanization, and industrial development, the need for sustainable sludge treatment and management has never been more critical. Investing in sustainable and reliable wastewater treatment solutions is crucial for industries and municipalities aiming to reduce their environmental footprint and optimize resource use.
