After being involved in the death of a fellow student, delinquent seven-teen-year-old, Barbie Hernandez moves from Southern California to the small town of Floh, Texas with her alcoholic mother. Forced to live out her final year of high school surrounded by the stranger people of the American South, Barbie begins to lose sight of who she is.
When she meets Odelia Washington, fellow outcast and self-proclaimed witch, things start to not look so bad. Then they get complicated once again when she meets the most popular boy in school and the president of their Christian Club, Aaron Grammer. The young man is the complete opposite of every guy from Barbie's past, good grades, doesn't ditch class, and a desire to remain "above reproach," though, Barbie can't help but feel gravitated towards him.
New life breathes into Barbie as she begins to set roots in town but she can't be sure that's anything to be hopeful about when she begins to hear voices, sees ghosts strolling through town, and gets wind of a secret organization that's playing puppet master with the town and being orchestrated by the most influential figures in Floh.
Literally caught between Heaven and Hell, Barbie must find passage for herself, her mother, and others, as she tries to uncover the truth of this seemingly wholesome, bible-thumping town before it's too late.
