Kenya's Political History: Ballots, Bullets, and Broken Promises

A Nation's Journey Through Hope, Betrayal, and the Unfinished Battle for Democracy

"In Kenya, the ballot and the bullet often walk hand in hand."

This powerful and deeply personal chronicle of Kenya's post-independence political journey pulls no punches. In Kenya's Political History: Ballots, Bullets, and Broken Promises, the author deftly weaves memoir, investigative reportage, and historical analysis to illuminate the cycles of promise and betrayal that have shaped the country's political soul-from colonial rule and one-party dictatorship to fragile multiparty reforms, digital manipulation, and ethnopolitical unrest.

Through vivid storytelling, the book recounts pivotal moments like the 1982 coup attempt, the reintroduction of multiparty politics in the 1990s, the euphoria and disillusionment of the 2002 transition, the trauma of the 2007 post-election violence, and the controversial "Handshake" in the aftermath of the 2017 elections. At its heart, this is a story of everyday Kenyans-teachers, youth, mothers, whistleblowers-navigating a democracy often hijacked by elites, marred by ethnic polarization, and haunted by the ghosts of impunity.

Key Themes:

• The rise and entrenchment of authoritarian rule post-independence

• The manipulation of elections and ethnic identity

• Grassroots resistance and civil society's role in democratic reform

• First-hand accounts from moments of crisis, including election violence

• Critical analysis of judicial failures, electoral bodies, and political "handshakes"

• The psychological toll of political betrayal on generations

Combining brutal honesty with heartfelt reflection, this book is both a testimony and a warning. It demands that Kenya confront its past to chart a more just and inclusive future. For scholars, citizens, and global readers alike, this is essential reading on power, memory, and the fragile fabric of African democracy.
