Women of Color and Accomplishment Fighting for Equality

A powerful visual and historical tribute to overlooked African American women who shaped the fight for freedom and justice.

This second volume in the Women of Color and Accomplishment series continues artist Carol Jacobsen's mission to honor African American women who have long been ignored by traditional history books. Through richly painted portraits and compelling short biographies, this book brings to light the stories of women who played pivotal roles in the struggle for equality-yet remain in the shadows of mainstream historical narratives.

Inspired by deep research into African American history, Jacobsen's portraits feature women from the past whose courage, intelligence, and perseverance made lasting contributions to their communities and to the nation's progress. From those who fought for civil rights and resisted segregation to educators, journalists, and political pioneers, each woman is presented with dignity, respect, and a compelling narrative that reveals the obstacles she overcame.

Set against the backdrop of key historical moments-beginning with the arrival of enslaved Africans in 1619 and spanning the Civil War, Reconstruction, and the rise of Jim Crow laws-this book provides important context for understanding the immense challenges these women faced. Despite discrimination and erasure, they found ways to lead, serve, and inspire.

These pages showcase women who refused to perform for segregated audiences, fought for equal laws, educated the next generation, and used their voices to spread truth through journalism. Their stories deserve to be told, and their legacies deserve recognition.

Printed in deluxe color and featuring original portrait art, Women of Color and Accomplishment: Fighting for Equality is both a celebration and a call to remembrance. It is ideal for readers of all ages who are interested in African American history, women's history, and the ongoing struggle for justice and equality.
