Running away and scraping a living on the streets of London, Job's destiny changes when, still a youth, he signs on as a deckhand aboard the Yeoman, a coastal steamer bound for the far reaches of Australia. During the arduous voyage, he befriends William Jones, a convict laborer, and Eleanor, the woman determined to see William free. Their bond becomes a lifeline that carries them through years to come.

After arriving in Western Australia, Job finds work manning the lighthouse station on remote Breaksea Island off Albany. The windswept rock is as lonely as it is beautiful, but Job saves diligently and writes faithfully to Alice, the bright, determined young woman he left behind in England. When he has enough to offer her a new life, he sends for her, and she bravely undertakes the voyage. At the ighthouse overlooking the Southern Ocean, they are married-a union forged in hope, isolation, and the promise of a fresh start.

Together, Job and Alice build their first modest home on Breaksea Island. They endure fierce storms, supply shortages, and the constant threat of illness, raising their first three children but their resilience only deepens their bond. In time, seeking more stable prospects for their growing family, they relocate first to Rottnest as Pilot to Bunbury as Harbour master.

The story follows the couple through decades of pioneering hardship and modest triumphs. Alice raises their children with quiet fortitude The close friendship with William and Eleanor Jones sustains them all; their families remain intertwined through good times and grief.

As their children come of age, each chooses a path shaped by the rough conditions of colonial Australia. Eva endures a tragic early widowhood before finding love again, Joseph takes to farming despite drought and debt, and Rose and Ella navigate marriages and motherhood against a backdrop of rapid social change. The Great Depression forces some to return home, crowding again under a single roof, but the shared burden only strengthens their bond.
