Edith Stein's complicated personal journey took her from Judaism to agnosticism, philosophy and Catholicism, and ended in a Nazi concentration camp. Born in Poland in 1891, Edith Stein was the first German woman to earn a doctorate in philosophy; a close confidante of Edmund Husserl, the father of Phenomenology; and an early feminist. In 1921, she became interested in mysticism and converted to Catholicism, joining the Carmelite Order as Teresa Benedicta of the Cross. Unable to emigrate before the Second World War broke out, she was arrested by the Gestapo in 1942 and deported to Auschwitz, where she died in the gas chamber. In 1998, she was canonized by Pope John Paul II.
