The Assassins (a.k.a. A Score to Settle)

In 1847, during the turbulent times of New Orleans as American forces prepare to invade Mexico, Timothy Wollfolk is shot and thrown into the Mississippi River by robbers. Lew Fannin, an ex-Texas ranger on his way to join the army, encounters the scene and kills the attackers. Searching Wollfolk's baggage, Fannin discovers Timothy's rich legacy and, believing him dead, assumes his identity.

Two strands of deadly conflict unfold. Wollfolk is rescued from the river by the professional killer Lezin Morrisot, who takes him to his home, where his fair-skinned daughter nurses him back to health. After hearing of Wollfolk's troubles, Morrisot agrees to help him seek revenge on the man who has stolen his identity and fortune.

Fannin's masquerade as Wollfolk leads him into danger as he defends his stolen possessions against a quartet of ruthless cut-throats. He also encounters unexpected challenges when he meets the exquisite octoroon woman, part of Wollfolk's legacy, who stirs his senses while laying siege to his heart.

Amid this backdrop of American troops moving to war and yellow fever decimating New Orleans, Wollfolk and Fannin must decide whether they are enemies or allies, as both are ensnared in a noose of escalating violence drawn ever tighter by those bent on destroying the Wollfolk dynasty. Their choices culminate in a deadly showdown on the waterfront.
