If Only Ray Bradbury Had Written His Own Version Of 'On Writing...'
Sadly, that never happened.
But what Bradbury has left us is a rich legacy of essays discussing his approach to writing, a detailed interview on his writing in The Paris Review, and multiple talks and interviews that are freely available on YouTube.
From those resources, I've created a short book that you can read in less than 90 minutes that distils the three biggest lessons any writer can take from Bradbury's idiosyncratic approach to writing.
Here's some of what you'll learn:
Why All Writers Should Learn From Ray Bradbury (Section 1)
What You Should Read For The Next 1000 (or 10,000) Nights (Section 16)
The Four Components Of Bradbury's "Write In Flow" Process (Lesson 3)
Ten Benefits Of Following Bradbury's "Story A Work" Program (Section 9)
The (Hidden) Brilliance Of Bradbury's Reading Program (Sections 18 and 19)
Filling The Tank (Filling The Well) (Section 22)
Bradbury's Caveat To The "One Story A Week" Program - That Most Writing Teachers Miss
The Reframe For Non-Fiction Writers To Make Bradbury's "Story A Week" Program Work For Them
Using Visual Media To Complement Bradbury's Reading Program (Sections 24 and 25)
The 10 to 50X/One Level Up Approach (Section 21)
The Theatre Of The Morning - And How To Have Two Every Day! (Section 29)
How To Use The "One Story A Week" Program To Improve Your Writing (Section 12)
How Bradbury Used Lists To Trigger Story Ideas - And What Was In Those Lists (Lesson 4/Section 32)
Bradbury's Ten Commandments of Writing With Zest And Gusto (Section 4)
How To Outsprint Your Conscious Mind (Section 27)
Bradbury was a massive believer in writers trying to find their true and authentic writing self, because only you can only write as 'you.' In the age of 'pseudo-writers' generating scuds of slop using AI, you can't compete on quantity. What you can compete on is quality. And authenticity. Bradbury's methods will lead you a long way down the path towards writing in your own authentic style.
My advice: buy the book - it's about the same price as a fancy cup of coffee - read The Fractal Overview of the book (Section 3). pick whichever of the main three lessons appeals to you the most or most closely aligns to your writing philosophy, read that section, and start implementing. Not tomorrow. Not next week. Today.
This book is written for fiction writers and non-fiction writers alike. If you want to be an authentic writer...following Bradbury's footsteps will take you a long way down that road.
