Vala Boddason was an awkwardly average seventeen-year-old girl from a small town in Oregon. She spent nights escaping her loathsome foster home with her equally ordinary-albeit stunning-best friend, Helene.

On one of their nightly excursions, the girls gazed into the night sky while laughing about boys and high school drama. Vala fell into a deep, hazy sleep, dreaming of darkness and destiny.
