Sacred texts weren't shaped only by men-women preserved, transmitted, and created sacred wisdom across all traditions, then were systematically erased from memory. For millennia, women served as scribes, scholars, mystics, and keepers of sacred knowledge. Yet their contributions have been minimized, reinterpreted, or entirely written out of religious history. From Mary Magdalene's transformation from apostle to repentant prostitute to Aisha bint Abi Bakr's scholarly authority being diminished by later jurists-this is the story of how editorial choices across centuries silenced women's sacred voices.
Sacred Editors: The Women Who Shaped and Were Erased from Sacred Texts reveals the remarkable untold story of women's contributions to religious traditions. From early Buddhist nuns composing enlightened poetry to Jewish prophetesses being edited into footnotes, from Christian women mystics claiming divine authority to Hindu devotional poets challenging orthodoxy-these are the women who preserved sacred wisdom while being written out of official narratives.
