Cosmetic valorization of coffee grounds tested on "Wistar" rats

The aim was to formulate an antioxidant cream with a slimming effect based on coffee grounds and its cosmetic oil, and to incorporate this food residue into the diet of rats in order to confirm its anti-obesity role in vivo. For the in vitro study, our extract showed very high total antioxidant activity, in line with its richness in polyphenols, flavonoids and tannins. For the formulation of cosmetic creams, two creams were synthesized: one based on coffee grounds granules and the other on its oil. Their evaluations have shown that they have significant slimming power. What's more, they are germ-free and non-irritating. In the in vivo study, the inclusion of coffee grounds in the diet led to a reduction in the average body weight of the rats. However, biochemical analyses showed a decrease in blood triglyceride levels accompanied by liver damage, confirmed by a histological study carried out on liver fragments.
