商品簡介
Around the eastern Mediterranean, salt has long represented wisdom. And the phrase "take it with a grain of salt" advises us to apply our common sense and reason to whatever has been said. Indeed, Gautama Buddha instructed his flock to evaluate any information in that light. Even Buddha's own sage counsel. Yet all too often, when we enter into the realms of spiritual knowledge, we leave our salt behind. The irony, the paradox, is clear. With stars in our eyes, we surrender what wisdom about ourselves and our world that we have already gained in order to grasp promised insights. Assuming that spiritual knowledge can be achieved through mere belief, we set our salt aside. And so, we fail to "separate the wheat from the chaff," kernels of precious wisdom from the mythic stories, and even the riddles, in which they are so often encased. Mistaking figurative sense for literal fact, we lose our sense of moderation, of appropriate spiritual balance in life. Clearly, living life in a more present-oriented, past-reconciled, future-savvy way calls for an ongoing sense of circumspection. Applying our well-earned wisdom to each moment with inspiration, we achieve a more balanced life for ourselves and others. In doing so with increasing skill, we achieve a sense of "flow," of moving forward with reasonable grace, with our basic intentions for general betterment intact. Experience does teach us, if we are reasonably well-informed and mindful. In gradually gaining our sensibility of flow, over time we begin to better appreciate the feel of moving through life, within well-considered boundaries, like water in a river, well balanced, creatively flexible, and thus, spiritually free.
