As a seasoned Pararescue Jumper, Master Sergeant Maximilian Barrett is familiar with unstable landings and handling things when situations go sideways. But when a mission changes his whole world both physically and spiritually, everything gets complicated.

Barrett finds himself wrapped up in top secret assignments involving events called "Awakenings". He knows that it is an opportunity to use his skills to help people, but the secrecy and the extended time away from home puts a strain on his already struggling marriage.

After a particularly long and rough mission, things get even more unstable when Max comes home to an empty house. With his wife gone and not answering his calls, Barrett wonders if his marriage is beyond saving. The complications increase when a dangerous assignment is thrown at him in the midst of his dilemma, and he can't say "no", because God is saying "yes".

Barrett understands that God's will often leads people in unexpected ways, but he never would have thought it would lead away from his vow of "to have and to hold".
