The words they spoke were inadequate compared to the raging tumult that was charging around his head. He wanted to scream, to plead with a god he didn't believe in to save his life. He wanted to spare Maggie the pain that was coming.
He couldn't do any of those things, so he stood helplessly, holding his wife in his arms as the short winter day drew to a close and the sky darkened into night."
